@@@^God has ordained that the ministry be supported by the tithe, but you elders are consuming everything — tithe, freewill offerings, plate collections, harvest ingathering, legacies and what not! And though the Spirit of Prophecy instructed you years ago to pay the ministerial college teachers from the tithe (@9Testimonies@7, Vol. 6, p. 215), you still continue to pay them by collecting tuition and entrance fees from the students! You thus cheat the students in order to use on yourselves their rightful part of the tithe! The Sabbath and the church you have turned Into institutions of gain instead of rest, prayer, praise, and study. All this you do to feed yourselves and still you do not have enough. What a bottomless pit your stomachs must be! Do you still deny that you have eaten up the vineyard?

@@@^Our prayerful hope, Brethren, is that you will sit down to business and study the additional Truth (“Early Writings,” p. 277) so that you be not led to bitterly cry out: “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” Jer. 8:20. The harvest, you again see, takes place during the time of salvation.

@@@^If one is suffering from a hereditary disease, for which his parents, grandparents, or great grandparents alone are guilty, he is, of course, helpless to do much of anything in the line of complete recovery, be it by dieting or by using drugs. He may, however, be able to control the disease or even to overcome it by being strictly obedient to the laws of God, knowing that nothing in the world will effect a cure for such illness but prayer, if God’s wisdom so decrees.

@@@^There are diseases which attack even the healthiest and best-cared for plants. For example, when a tree that is planted in the best of soils and is well cared for, becomes infested with insects or disease, then no matter what one does with the soil, he cannot thereby cause the pestilence to disappear: and if the tree is not sprayed with drugs that will exterminate the disease, the tree dies. In like manner, if one’s morals, diet, and hygiene, have been faultless and still are when he takes sick, and if his ailment is not hereditary, then no matter what more he does with his diet, he will realize no healing virtues from it. Drugs are his best remedy if prayer fails.

@@@^Again, if a healthy and well-cared-for horse takes sick, drugs of some kind are obviously the only possible cure. Thus if the daily living of a human being is faultless, and yet he takes sick, then outside of prayer, what can he do but resort to drugs?

@@@^On the contrary, though, our implicitly minding God’s commands, doing what He would have us do, so as to enable us to pray “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man,” which “availeth much” (James 5:16), must necessarily make us a mighty bulwark against any aggression — against any intrusion upon Democracy or upon Christianity. Genesis 18:23-33 reveals that had God found only ten such men in wicked Sodom and Gomorrah, He would have spared the cities from the everlasting doom that was theirs. He will do no less today.

@@@^In view of all these considerations and historical examples, we believe that it can be understood that our unhesitating confidence in God and our prayers and efforts to serve Him, also the Government’s respect for our faith in God, must necessarily be of infinitely greater help to our country than whatever bit our serving the military in violation of God’s law, and in neglect of His work, would add in manpower to the country’s military might. He never condemns anyone’s idea before an honest, prayerful, investigation of it.
